Exfoliation is the peeling and shredding of the outer layer of skin, whereby oily and dead cells are removed from the skin to get a fresher skin below. To Exfoliate your skin you have to use an exfoliator which is an ingredient that assists in this process. Skincare cannot be complete without the exfoliation process because it plays major roles which we will explore later. Types of peeling and exfoliation treatments range from brushing treatments and light enzyme peels to strong surgical peels. However, there are two basic types of exfoliation treatments which include the mechanical and chemical forms. Removing cell layers from the surface of the skin can be used to treat a variety of both cosmetic and medical problems.

MECHANICAL EXFOLIANTS

The latest in mechanical exfoliation is known as microdermabrasion. A microdermabrasion machine uses chemical crystals to get rid of dead cells off the surface of the skin. These crystals are directed through a vacuum to clear the skin. At the same time, dead skin cells are picked up along with the crystal residue so it may be necessary go over the skin several times considering the skin type and the quantity of dead cells.

CHEMICAL EXFOLIANTS

In chemical exfoliation, dead skin cells that are compacted together are dissolved by chemical agents such as alphahydroxy acids and enzymes.

The exfoliating procedures referred to as enzyme peels; involve the use of substances called keratolytic enzymes which speed up the breakdown of keratin, the protein found in skin. Keratolytic enzyme peels are generated from juice of the papaya fruit.

  • Pumice stone
  • Body Lotion

INSTRUCTIONS

  • It is important for you to brush the dry skin with a body brush or exfoliating gloves. This should be done before applying water which helps remove the loose skin and thus preparing the skin for exfoliating process. First with the sores of your feet, proceeding to the upper body.
  • Wet your body from head to toe.  As a matter of precaution, don’t exfoliate your skin if you have any open cuts or wounds or you are sun burned.
  • Utilize a pumice stone on your feet to eliminate rough spots. If your feet are extremely rough, soak them in a basin of warm water mixed with a cup of milk for 30 minutes.
  • Put the exfoliating cleanser to your gloves. Begin scrubbing your body in a circular motion starting with the bottoms of your feet while going on to the upper body.
  • Use your body brush; to exfoliate your back and other places that are not easy to reach.
  • Remember to be gentle; especially on your face, particularly around your eyes and mouth. For these areas, use an exfoliating product especially formulated for the face because it will treat the facial skin better than those used on the body. Even stubborn makeup will be eliminated with this step.
  • Do not forget about the hands.  Gently apply some of the lotion in them.
  • Rinse your body. Do this with the lukewarm water then with cold water and also apply a shower gel, in the process, to help soften your skin.
  • Step out of the shower. After stepping out of the shower, make sure you use a moisturizing body lotion all over. Body lotions and facial moisturizers containing alpha or betahydroxy acids are ultimate choices because these acids continue to aid in removing dead skin cells.
  • Apply body moisturizer once a day. The procedure of exfoliating is drying to the skin so to keep your skin hydrated; you must use a moisturizer at least once a day.

WHY EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN:

Exfoliation is a very important part of skincare as it helps your skin get young-looking and glowing. Removing the dead cells removes dirt that would otherwise clogs pores and aids in controlling skin disorders such as acne. As you advance in age, your cell turnover rate slows down. The result is dreary, irregular, older looking skin.

Children have good skin due to the fact that their skin cells turn over quickly, illuminating fresh skin constantly. In much older adults, the process cannot go on, on its own. That’s where exfoliation comes in to help with this process.

Exfoliation deals with various skin disorders for example; dry skin, dogged pores and rough skin surface.
